Question 1 of 6

The last time you set a direction that mattered, how many people were in the room?

Question 2 of 6

How many people have to act on it?

Question 3 of 6

How many management layers sit between you and the last person who has to act on it?

Question 4 of 6

Afterwards, did anybody ask people what they came away with?

Question 5 of 6

What came back?

Question 6 of 6

Since that event, how many times have you explained the same thing again?

Take the first step yourself, tomorrow.

Pick two people who were not in the room. Ask them one question.

What did you come away with from that meeting, in your own words?

Then read what comes back against what you actually meant them to leave with.

Do not ask whether they understood. That asks somebody to grade themselves in front of their employer, and almost everyone says yes.

To discuss what these mean for your next one

Twenty minutes. Not a pitch, and if there is nothing in it for you I will say so.

What the three scores mean

Exposure Risk is the size of the job. How many people have to act on it, how many layers sit between you and the last one. Not something you chose, and not something you fix by trying harder.

Activity Risk is whether anyone has actually checked. This is the one you can change, and it is what checking is for.

Alignment Cost is what it is already costing you. How many times you have had to say it again.
